Water Scarcity & Availability

Off Grid Tree Watering

Challenge Background

The success of reforestation efforts in arid areas depends largely on water accessibility and management. Unfortunately, insufficient humidity around the roots is causing the trees we plant to die, This is a significant challenge in the implementation of the Great Green Wall. The route of the Great Green Wall passes through an area with a short rainy season lasting only 2 to 3 months, with erratic rainfall between 100 and 300mm per year. Water wells are deep, ranging from 200 to 350m, and there is a complete absence of irrigation mechanisms. As a result, the small stems planted during the rainy season are left to fend for themselves during the dry season, often resulting in their death due to the harsh conditions of dryness and lack of water.

What we are looking for

We are looking for an off-grid solution to provide water to individual trees on an as-needed basis year-round to ensure the survival of the millions of plants we reforest each year.
We are looking for a solution that captures runoff water from rainfalls or any other available source of water and stores it for future use in watering the plants. Additionally, the mechanism must maintain adequate moisture and microbial activity at the roots level. We face the challenge of a long dry season in Senegal, so the solution must allow for rapid refilling and be resistant to sunlight and bushfires, It should also be reusable for several years .

Solution criteria

Low cost (ideally less than $5 a unit) to fit budgets
Be easy to install, move and reinstall
Retain maximum of water underground
Be able to release on-need-basis year-round
Of easy maintenance

What we offer

Design of technology, testing, prototype, sampling, production line
